Sixth graders from Greene County, Paton-Churdan and Coon Rapids-Bayard, congregated at Squirrel Hollow Park Thursday, May 12, to learn about nature and conservation. There were nine mini-courses beginning at 9:30 am, with topics including soils, bees, timber wildlife, Iowa trees, native birds, monarch butterflies, gun safety, grasslands and birds of prey.
The all-day event was presented by Greene Soil & Water Conservation District and Greene County Conservation Club. The Greene County Environmental Habitat Corp sponsored Kay Newman-Judson from SOAR (Saving Our Avian Resources).
Presenters who donated their time include Dan Towers and Dan Sayre of Greene County conservation; Susan Cort of the Iowa DNR; Steve Hanlin, USDA entomologist; Brad Riphagan of Trees Forever; Aaron Eggert, NRCS soil conservationist; Steve Haupert, Greene County sheriff and 4-H Shooting Sports/gun safety; and Chrissy Rhoades, wildlife biologist.
Organizers thanked all those who participated and helped.
